The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 11, Post #2
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 11:5-10
We just started a new chapter last week, and now we are finishing it. We are on the final plague that the Almighty is doing in the land of Mitsraim (Egypt). This one will be the one that gets Far'oh (Pharaoh). The other plagues were bad but this one will institute a new Meod (Appointed Time), one that is still practiced in 2025, every spring. Some call these Moedim 'Jewish Holidays' but they are more serious than that. The Creator calls this one, "an everlasting memorial" of what he did.
We left off last week with Moshe (Moses) standing before an angry Far'oh and we are now reading the angry rebuttal by Moshe. He speaks very loudly to the people of Mitsraim as well as Far'oh. He is predicting the death of every firstborn and the pain that families will feel as a result. He again tells them that they will see that God makes a distinction between Mitsraim (Egyptians) and Israel.
The prediction even includes how Far'oh's own servants will bow down to Moshe and tell him and his people to "Get out!" He finishes his speech with the words, "And then I will go out of Egypt."
El Shadai goes on to tell Moshe that the ruler will not listen, yet again. And his heart was made strong again.
There will be several posts on Pesach (Passover) from here forward.
Today's reading
English
We left off with:
So Moses said, "Thus says the Lord: About midnight I will go out in the midst of Egypt...
This week, he continues speaking to Far'oh:
... and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the cattle. There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there has never been, nor ever will be again. But not a dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel, either man or beast. that you may know that YHVH makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.' And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me, saying, 'Get out, you and all the people who follow you.' And after that I will go out." And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger. Then YHVH said to Moses, "Pharaoh will not listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt."
Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land
