The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 42, Post #7

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 42:35-38

Today we wrap up another chapter in the story of Joseph.

We saw the ten brothers explaining how Simeon had to stay behind as a pledge until the ruler of Mitzraim (Egypt) gets to see the little brother.

Today we hear how they found all the money they used to pay for the grain is in their sacks. They were afraid and the brothers wanted to take the smallest one, Benjamin, to the ruler and get their brother back. Reuben was the one that suggested himself as the is most trustworthy, offering his father the opportunity to kill his sons if he does not bring little Benjamin home. That idea, to me, seems a bit savage. What about the trust that Reuben's kids have in him.

Jacob flatly refused. If anything were to happen to the last child of his deceased wife Rachel. he said that they would bring his old gray head to sorrow in Sheol, the Hebrew version of Hell so to speak.

As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me." Then Reuben said to his father, "Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you." But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol
