The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 12, Post #7

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 12:29-33

Sometimes things move slowly in the Hebrew scriptures. Today is not one of those times. Elohim (God) has been telling Moshe (Moses) since the beginning, "... and he will not listen to you." He also said that he will harden his heart, talking about the ruler of Mitsraim (Egypt). Yet, Moshe went through the motions through the first nine plagues. Today, all of that ends. I guess they can ignore hail, locusts, frogs, red water, calling them "coincidence" or finding natural explanations. But they will not be able to do that with the last plague.

Today's passage starts with, "At midnight YHVH struck down all of the firstborn in the land of Egypt..." There was not one home that did not know death. From the humans to the animals, all the firstborn with breath were dead. We read that they were all up during the night , moaning and grieving. Then Far'oh (Pharaoh) summoned Moshe and Aharon (Aaron) and told them to get up and get out from among his people. Take your people, flocks, herds, and go to serve YHVH as you said you wanted. Just bless me also. (that statement is interesting.)

Next, they heard from the Mitsraim (the Egyptians) who were worried that they too would die, so they were anxious to get the people of Israel out of the land as soon as possible.

So, the plan of Elohim is in motion now. We will see more about the people and their exit from Mistsraim next week.

Today's reading

English

At midnight YHVH struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was not dead. Then he summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said, "Up, go out from among my people, both you and the people of Israel; and go, serve YHVH, as you have said. Take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone, and bless me also!"

The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, "We shall all be dead."
