The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 16, Post #6
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 16:27-31
The people are free from slavery in Mitsraim, but they are having trouble with the rules that God is giving them. He told them not to gather on the seventh day, but some went out to get the miraculous bread anyway and they found none. Let's see how The Creator reacts.
God came to Moshe (Moses) and brought up the subject. "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? See! YHVH has given you the Sabbath..." he said, and the entire law regarding this matter was stated clearly again for those who were not paying attention. I assume that Moshe passed that word of instruction on to the people because the passage also says that, in response, the people rested on the seventh day, as we still do today.
At the end of today's passage, I see something I that I was waiting to see. It says, "Now, the people of Israel called its name "manna" - I had heard many teachers tell the story about Ma and Na which means "what now?" but I see the name in Hebrew below mem nun which is pronounced man (the a sounds like the vowel in the word 'mop'). Yet the translators to English just decided to add the ---na at the end.
Live and learn I guess.
Lastly we gain a description of the taste of this substance. It is white and tastes like coriander, a wafer made with honey. I will have to get some coriander and taste it with a little honey to see what they are talking about.
Today's Reading
English
On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. And YHVH said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? See! YHVH has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." So the people rested on the seventh day.
Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
