The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 17, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 17:12-15

Today we are finishing up chapter 17 with Moshe (Moses) having trouble keep in his hands in the air. If he drops his hands, then Israel starts to lose the war, as we read last week.

So Aharon (Aaron) and Hur are on the mountain with him as shown in the cover image. As the sun went down, we see that Y'hosua (Joshua) and his army prevailed and won against Amalek. I will talk about the plural of a nation when we run into one. They are known in the English Bible as the Amalekites, Hitites, Gebusites, etc., but the plural is actually "eem" or "ote" for nations.

With that great win in the books, the war is done. El Shaddai speaks of writing it down in an actual book, as a memorial, and that it will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek under Heaven.

Moshe also builds an alter called "YHVH is my banner" then spoke of God being at war on into the future from generation to generation.

Next week, we start a new chapter and cover a bit about the personal life of Moshe, his wife and kids. Was she with him through the parting of the waters and the splitting of the rock? We will find out about that next week.

We are in the midst of Pesach right now which is like having three days of rest all together, Thursday, Friday, and Shabbat. No work is done on these three days, but I planned ahead and wrote this on Wednesday. I will pop on line to post it at the normal time.

But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

Then YHVH said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, YHVH Is My Banner saying, "A hand upon the throne' of YHVH! YHVH will have war with Amalek from generation to generation."
