The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 17, Post #1
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 17:1- 6
We just finished chapter 16 last week, where we saw how they dealt with hunger in the wilderness. Now we are moving into chapter 17 and a different problem comes up. I would like to add that I see a pattern developing which involves memories of how nice it was to be slaves back in Mitsraim (Egypt).
The chapter starts out with a move. They just left a place called Sin and, according to God's command, they arrived and set up camp at Rephidim. That is where it all starts up again. They complained due to the lack of water.
Then Moshe (Moses) basically says, "What do you want me to do about it?" Then he adds, "Why do you put God to the test?" but the people of Israel did not seem to hear that part. They went on to talk about how nice it was back in Egypt when they were slaves. They complained that Moshe had brought them out of Mitsraim so that they could die of thirst. "You are killing us..." they said, adding that their children and their livestock are dying as well. I would guess that none had died, as of yet, at that point.
Moshe then cries out to The Almighty expressing his concerned that they might stone him to death. God answers with a set of instructions. Take the elders with you and bring your staff, the same one you used to strike the Nile, hee-ne-Nee oh-Med al ha-Tsoor b'choReb (I will stand on the rock at Horeb), you will strike the rock and water will come out. And the people will drink.
The passage ends with "He did so ion the site of the elders of Israel."

All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of YHVH, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test YHVH?" But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried to YHVH, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." And YHVH said to Moses, "Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
