The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 18, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 18:22-27
We heard from Moshe's (Moses') father-in-law last week after he saw the throngs of people that waited for Moshe to judge between each and his neighbor, kind of like 'small claims court' does. We are going to hear more from yee-t'Roh (Jethro) on how the process should be set up this week. Will Moshe accept the advice?
He suggested that small problems be decided by delegated trustworthy men and large issues would be elevated to the seat of Mshoe. And yee-t'Roh assured Moshe that Elohim (God) will direct him. He told Moshe that this would help him endure his daily responsibilities, and the people will be at peace.
The scripture says that Moshe did all that is father-in-law prescribed. The reading repeats the part of the chiefs and structure groupings. It also says that it was up and running - working well and the people seemed satisfied.
Then he saw yee-t'Roh off as he headed back to his own country.

And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace."
So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. And they judged the people at all times. Any hard case they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves. Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went away to his own country
