The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 18, Post #2

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 18:6-11

We are in the midst of a grand reunion of Moshe (Moses), his wife, and her father as they compare notes and tell the Exodus story to someone who was not part of it for the first time. Last week we heard that yee-t'Roh (Jethro) was coming and that Moshe's wife and daughters were also on their way.

Today, we read how Moshe goes out to meet yee-t'Roh, bowed before him, and kissed him. "How have you been?" - "Good, and you?" would likely be something like this, "Ma shlomcha?" - "Slomee tov. Ma shlomcha atah?" Then they went into the tent.

Moshe tells his father-in-law the story and all that God did to convince Far'oh (Pharaoh) to let them go, and then all that had happened to them on the way while in the desert after passing through the sea, literally.

Yeet'Roh then praises YHVH and proclaims that he is greater than all other gods. It sounds like a wonderful reunion so far, but he still needs to meet the once enslaved masses that experienced it all. That starts next week.

Today's Reading

English

And when he sent word to Moses, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her," Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. And they asked each other of their welfare and went into the tent.

Then Moses told his father-in-law all that YHVH had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the Moshe had delivered them. And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that YHVH had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

'"Jethro said, "Blessed be YHVH, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh and has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that YHVH is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.
