The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 14, Post #1
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 14:1-4
Chapter 14 starts with some instructions for the people now that they are out of bitter servitude in Mitsraim (Egypt). The purpose for these plans is stated at the end of out reading today. So that they know Anee Yeh'Vah (I am YHVH).
There is an omitted vowel in the name of God, and some do not say his name, but in the writings he always does things so that people, in this case the Mitsraim (Egyptians), will know his name. That is why I write the letters.
On with the story. He tells them to camp between Migdol and the sea near Baal Tse-fon. I am not sure where all of those places were, but the Almighty states the reason for that location. It is so that Far'oh (Pharaoh) will look at them as if they are stupid, thinking they are cornered with no escape.
Again, Elohenu (our God) tells them that he will make Far'oh's heart strong so that he pursues them...
"...and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am YHVH."
Hundreds of times throughout the Tanakh, he states that as the reason for his actions. In the process, he also saves his people. He wants the glory and He deserves it. He is the only one that can make pillars of fire, and open the sea, which is coming up soon in our story.
Today's reading
English
Then the Lord said to Moses, "Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, 'They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.' And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am YHVH." And they did so.
