The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 14, Post #6

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 14:23-26

The people's panic turned to rescue and protection last week when a pillar of fire stood between the chosen people and the army of Mitsraim (Egypt). This week, it is time to zipper that open fly on them.

The waters have been standing as walls for over 30 hours at this point in our story. We know that because Exodus says that The Almighty stood between the the army and the people and a wind blew on the sea bed so that they could walk on dry land. Then we have to account for the time it took them to walk across.

Today's reading tells us that the Mitsraim pursued them into the sea. Then The Creator of Heaven and Earth looked down from the pillar of fire at the Mitsraim soldiers and caused them to feel panic, and he made their chariot wheels get stuck... We have to assume that the pillar had stayed behind Isreal as they walked. The text does not say anything about the pillar lifting or standing aside.

Now, the Mitsraim started talking amongst themselves. Now they are worried that Israel has a powerful God fighting for them. (I would have made that assumption 1 pillar and 9 plagues ago.)

Then God tells Moshe (Moses) to stretch out his hand over the sea so that it can return to its place, covering the Mitsraim. We also have a hint coming next week that the army were attempting to escape to the nearest shore, where Israel fled to... (that is for next week).

Today's reading

English

The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And in the morning watch YHVH in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, clogging' their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians."

Then YHVH said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen."
