The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 14, Post #7
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 14:27-31
We are finishing another chapter today! This is the passage that closes the book on the Mitsraim (Egyptians) and their army pursuing Israel. We heard God's instruction, telling Moshe (Moses) to raise his hand over the sea last week.
This week's reading tells us that Moshe did just that, and the sea returned to its previous state, The Mitsraim fled, and God threw them into the sea. That is what it says.
As the cover photo suggests, they were now confused and lacking air to breathe. The passage tells us that none who followed the army into the path through the sea, none survived.
We read the recap before this chapter ends. I find it interesting that the last verse says, "Israel saw the Mitsraim dead on the seashore." Then it tells us that Israel saw the great power that YHVH used against the Mitsraim and the people believed in God and in his servant Moshe.
Today's reading
English
So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, YHVH threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained. But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
Thus YHVH saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great power that YHVH used against the Egyptians, so the people feared YHVH, and they believed in YHVH and in his servant Moses.
