The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 15, Post #1

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 15:1-6

We start a new chapter today after God tossed the army of Far'oh (Pharaoh) in to the sea last week.

The people of Israel were protected by a pillar of fire and then watched the oyev (ones being hostile) die when the sea fell on them - the English calls them enemies, but Israel was not fighting them. They were being hostile toward people they had set free. I think that is more accurate.

The song they sing recounts the story they had just witnessed. The name of the Almighty is mentioned many times in this song. After reading the English and the same using His name, the words "The Lord" do not cut it, especially after reading over and over that God is doing x, y, and z "So they will know that I am YHVH!"

We also see his nick name Ya, which is the first word (left) on the third line in our Hebrew reading for today. That nickname is contained in the word haleluya. Lets translate that word we all know: halel (praise) loo (all of you) Ya (YHVH).

El is another nick name he has which is short for Elohim. Most of you know that it means "God" whether talking about God or gods throughout the scriptures. Hebrew has no capital letters and therefor, you cannot capitalize the first letter of a proper noun.

We also see the name Yeshua (Jesus) in verse two - his name simply means Salvation and is heard in many Jewish prayers and weekly songs like the Havdala - sung at sundown after every shabbat (Saturday night). Salvation (yeshua) is mentioned five times in the first part of this song that most if not all Jews sing after their shabbat rest ends.

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to YHVH, saying,

"I will sing to YHVH, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

YHVH is my strength and
my song, and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father's God, and I will exalt him.

YHVH is a man of war;
YHVH is his name.

" Pharaoh's chariots and his host he
cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.

The floods covered them;
they went down into the depths like a stone.

Your right hand, O YHVH,
glorious in power, your right hand, O YHVH, shatters the enemy
