The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 15, Post #2
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 15:7-13
Two weeks ago, we saw the army of Far'oh (Pharaoh) tossed into the sea that was falling in on them. Last week, we heard the people of Israel singing praise to the Almighty for the miraculous yeshua (salvation) they had just witnessed. And that continues in today's post.
They speak of God's great majesty in overthrowing their sataneem ( שטנים adversaries). The recount the waters piling up from the deep.
The Far'oh said that he will overtake them and divide the spoils, you know, the things that the Mitsraim (Egyptians) had just given them days ago when they left. Then how he they would destroy Israel. But, Elohim (God) blew wind from his nostrils and covered them with water and they sank like lead into the sea.
They are singing praises to YHVH, his holiness and glorious deeds. Their songs to God saying, "na-tee-Tah y'meen'Cha" (You stretched out your right hand) "and the earth swallowed them!"
I wonder what the melody of the song was. I know that all of this is recounted in the seder (order) which is said at Passover. It is really nice to see how it went in the Torah though.
Today's reading
English
In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries;
you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble.
At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
the floods stood up in a heap;
the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy said, 'I will pursue,
I will overtake, I will divide the spoil,
my desire shall have its fill of them.
I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.'
You blew with your wind;
the sea covered them;
they sank like lead in the mighty waters.
"Who is like you, O YHVH, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
You stretched out your right hand;
the earth swallowed them.
You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed;
you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
