The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 16, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 16:20-26
We were reading about this really cool "manna" (what is this now?) phenomenon last week. Moshe (Moses) was warning the people to only collect what they could eat today. He told them not to save it over night. But, as usual, they did not listen to Moshe.
Over night, the miraculous bread stank and it had worms in it. And some people were hording it so that they would not have to go out and gather it the next day. That was a stinky affair - there were worms in the manna. We also hear another detail regarding the manna. Our reading says that they would gather it in the morning and when the sun grew hot, it melted. I am guessing that they had to be out in the morning to get it before it melted.
Now that we know that it cannot be kept until the next day, I am sure nobody would attempt to do that. But wait! Moshe just said that they have to get two days worth of food on the sixth day of the week. They were told to bake or boil it and keep what is left until the next day so that they can eat on Shabbat.
This time, the bread from Heaven did not stink or breed worms. Not only that, but on Shabbat, the bread did not appear as it did the other six days. It is as if God wanted them to depend on him, trust him, and not grumble (as he still does today).

But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.
On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, he said to them, "This is what YHVH has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to YHVH; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.' " So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to YHVH; today you will not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none."
