The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 17, Post #2

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 17:7-11

We saw the rock splitting last week as the people, yet again, doubted the Almighty. Moshe (Moses) warned them that they were testing
Elohim though he had never failed them up to that point.

They named the place where that testing of the Creator occurred and the names reflect what happened there. It was called MasSah (temptation) and MeriBah (quarrel, provocation, strife) due to their failure to trust the God of Israel. They said, "Is YHVH among us or not?" which is an insult to the Father of life itself who did so many wonders to get them out of bondage.

Then our reading changes to the topic of war as they face their first battle. Amalek came up against Israel in battle. Moshe has a plan I think. He tells them to choose men to fight and says, "I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand." If a sea stood up and opened for that man and his staff, I think Amalek is in trouble.

Two others are brought into our story, y'ho-Shua (Joshua) and Hur (same in Hebrew/English), as we see the battle start. Moshe is on the hill, staff in hand, and his hand is raised. He is watching over the battle and we see that when his hand up, Israel is winning and when he gets tired and drops his hand, the enemy starts to win.

We will continue the wartime play by play next week.

Today's Reading

English

And he called the name of the place Massah' and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested YHVH by saying, "Is YHVH among us or not?"

Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, "Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand." So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.
