The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 2, Post #2
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 2:11-14
Last week we saw Pharaoh's daughter finding a baby in a basket floating on the river and this week Moshe (Moses) is a man. Many details are added to the story in the original movie, almost 40 minutes of content, but the scriptures give us one sentence to cover a quarter of the movie. We see that he witnessed a mitsree (an Egyptian) beating eesh eebree (a Hebrew man), he killed him and hid the body in the sand.
The short Hebrew passage for today takes us through growing up, killing, hiding the body and the next day when he was hearing that people knew about it all. So much so that he is thinking of skipping town. After all, Pharaoh might find out about it.
Next week we will see if Moshe skips town or if he works with the other Hebrews and gets banished from the land like the movie portrays.
Today's reading
English
One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
