The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 3, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 3:12-14

Today we are continuing with the meeting Moshe (Moses) started with God last week at the burning bush.

As expected, Moshe asks why he would choose him for the task of bringing the children of Israel out of Mitsraim (Egypt). The Creator responds that he will be with him through it all. He then tells him that they will serve God on this mountain.

As a note on this, Moshe was in Midian when saw the burning bush, not in Sinai, and the mountain that he will bring them to is the same mountain, so the mountain we historically thought to be the holy mountain is likely wrong. There is another one in Midian though to which many people are taking tourist trips recently.

The scripture we are reading today continues with Mose asking how he will prove to the captives in Mitsraim that he really heard from the real God. Then God reveals his name to Moshe, stating his name to be "I am who I am."

Some translations state "I am that I am" and others could say "I am which I am" because the word asher is like the word que in Spanish and it covers all of those words in English.

Today's reading

English

But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" He said, "But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."

Then Moses said to God, "If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?" God said to Moses, "I am who I am."'
