Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 4:1-5
Today we start a new chapter while Moshe (Moses) is still on the mountain being charged to go get the Hebrews who were in forced servitude to the Mitsraim (Egyptians). He is arguing that the people of Israel will not believe him if he tells them that "I am that I am" has spoken to him on a mountain.
So The Almighty asked him what he had in his hand and he answered, "A staff." God told him to throw it on the ground. It became a serpent. Now we find out that Moshe is afraid of reptiles because he ran away.
Next, he was told to grab it by the tail and when he did, it became a staff again. This was to make the people believe that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and and Jacob had appeared to Moshe.
Some say, "Seeing is believing." which has happened to me on occasion. Those are great times to store the memory for when faith is needed but doubt creeps in. Note that the serpent of old also creeps. That may give you a clue as to why we doubt at times.
This meeting may go on for another couple of posts. It seems very important to the Creator that this man be the one to confront the ruler of Mitsraim (Egypt) and Moshe does not seem to be very confident that the people will believe him. Something tells me that he is starting to believe after the latest proof God has given him.

Then Moses answered, "But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, 'The Lord did not appear to you.'" The Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A staff." And he said, "Throw it on the ground." So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. But the Lord said to Moses, "Put out your hand and catch it by the tail" — so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand — "that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."
