The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 7, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 7:22-29
Today we are completing another chapter in the Torah. Last week, we saw Moshe (Moses) heading over to the edge of the Nile to have a chat with the Far'oh (Pharaoh) in the morning light. He did not mince words but told him, from YHVH, "Let my people go!"
Even as the water turned to blood in the river, all water in jars and vessels was also turned to blood. We are reading now that the people dug deep holes along the Nile in order to try and find clean water, but it was all tainted. Yet somehow the Magicians of Far'oh had been able to turn clean water into blood and copy the miracle Moshe did in last week's reading.
The English portion of our scripture ends with verse 25.
But the Hebrew continues on for a few more verses, telling Moshe to warn of the next plagues to come in a very detailed way. The creator gives details so vivid that the King should have been able to feel the panic ahead of experiencing it. This is the first time I have seen so many words omitted. I checked on line bibles and the same part has been omitted from the King James, NIV, The Living Bible and others. Very strange.
I will try to translate what the Hebrew goes on to say below - in italics.
Today's reading
English
But the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts. So Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them, as YHVH had said. Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile. Seven full days passed after YHVH had struck the Nile.
--omitted from the English text, let me translate the Hebrew--
Then YHVH said to Moshe, "Go to Far'oh and your are to say him 'Thus says YHVH, "Let my people go that they may serve me, but if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will cause a plague of frogs to fall upon the whole country. The Nile will be swarmed with frogs and they will enter your house and fill the the bedrooms and onto your bed. Frogs will be in the houses of your servants and on all of your people and in the their ovens and in your kneading bowls and on you and on your people and on all of your servants."'"
