The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 8, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 8:7-11

The verse numbering in Hebrew and English have been severely out of sync the last few posts. I have been going by the Hebrew verse numbers as far as the notations above...

In Hebrew we are on verses 7 through 11

The same reading in English: verses 11 through 15

I have seen disparity in verse numbering in my personal reading, in Psalms, but never more than one verse late per psalm. I am not sure what is causing this and also, as we have seen recently, whole paragraphs that appear in one language and are not represented in the other language.

Back to our story.

We left off last week when Far'oh (Pharaoh) having caved because of all the frogs in all the land as well as people's beds and living quarters. We left off with the ruler begging for Moshe (Moses) to pray to YHVH for the plague to end.

Today Moshe does as he was asked to do and the frogs all died. Far'oh has now broken his promise to let the people go. The text says that he saw that his problem was handled vehacheBED et lee-BOE (an made heavy his heart) and did not listen to them, as predicted by God. The English likes to say that his heart was hardened - I guess it is sort of the same thing.

Today's reading

English

11 The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Nile." 12 So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to YHVH about the frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh. 13 And YHVH did according to the word of Moses. The frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. 14 And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as YHVH had said.
