The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 9, Post #3
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 9:10-12
Last week Far'oh (Pharaoh) received a warning about the possibility of boils appearing on all the people and animals of Mitsraim (Egypt) if the people were not let go. The warning will be demonstrated by ash falling everywhere. That was the plan. Let's read on and see what happens.
We see the two heading out, Moshe (Moses) and his brother, to do what the Creator told them to do. They brought ash from the pottery kiln with them and tossed it high in the air as instructed. This plague did not take overnight to occur like the others before this one. The way it reads, everyone man and beast, immediately had boils appear on their skin. The reading only speaks about how ha-char'tooMim (the magicians) could not stand in the presence of Moshe because of how sore they were. I guess they had boils on the bottoms of their feet as well as everywhere else.
There is another thing that is different this time. That God had hardened the heart of Far'oh instead of the ruler making his own heart "hard", chazek (strong) is the word in Hebrew. He made his heart strong is how the scene reads in the holy language.
If you have ever had a boil, you know that it is anything but pleasant. If you have not, you do not want one.
Today's reading
English
So they took soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses threw it in the air, and it became boils breaking out in sores on man and beast. And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians. But YHVH hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as YHVH had spoken to Moses.
