The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 9, Post #4

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 9:13-16

Moshe (Moses) had taken ash from the kiln last week and tossed it up in the air. Everyone had boils on them, including the beasts of the field. In the end, (Pharaoh) hardened his heart and did not let the people go.

This week, God's monologue is a bit longer and he speaks of what the purpose of all these plagues is all about. He starts out with the command to "Let my people go that they may serve me." Then he goes on about how all the plagues will fall on Far'oh (Pharaoh) oova-abaDAYcha (and on your servants) oova-ahMEcha (and on your people). The "cha" is pronounced like the "j" in 'frijoles' followed by the sound "ah" in English. That "cha" is equal to 'your'. The "oova" means "and on" - The other sounds in the above are the parts of those words meaning "servant" and "people.

The purposes I spoke about are the fact that "there is not anyone like Me in all the earth", how he could have "killed Far'oh with all these plagues", and that YHVH makes him stand in order to show him His strength and for His name's sake, "So that My Name would be proclaimed in all the earth."

Today's reading

English

Then YHVH said to Moses, "Rise up early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says YHVH, the God of the Hebrews, "Let my people go, that they may serve me. For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself,' and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
