The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 43, Post #4

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 43:16-22

Today's reading starts with the words, "When Joseph saw Benjamin..." and his gruff demeanor was gone. He invited them all into his own house and he ordered a feast. This was the beginning of the end of the horrors he had endured and the separation of Jacob's family. I cry when I read this part of the bible because the pain of being separated from a family member is still the same today as it was back then.

"The men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph's house." it says. Those "men" were his brothers and Joseph longed to reveal himself to them. They, on the other hand, were afraid and thought they would be harmed because of the money "mistake" that happened. The brothers pulled the steward of the house aside and explained the error of the money to him saying, "We brought that money back with us plus more to pay for more grain.

But the boys are in for a surprise! That is the part that touches my soul and we will be talking about that in the next few posts. This is an amazing story of treachery and restoration. Restoration is what God is all about.

Today's reading

English

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon." The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph's house. And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph's house, and they said, "It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys." So they went up to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house, and said, "Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food. And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man's money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks."
