The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 44, Post #1
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 44:1-8
We move on into chapter 44 now and Joseph is toying with is brothers a bit more before he feels it is time to reveal himself as their brother.
Our passage today shows Joseph instructing the steward to put the brothers' money back in their sacks yet again and he was also to put the ruler's silver cup in the sack of the youngest one.
They were awakened as soon as the sun was up and started traveling away from the city. At that time, Joseph told them to go after the men and when they have been stopped, you are to ask them why they have "repaid evil for good." He did not mention the silver cup but did say that Joseph drinks from that cup and that he practices divination using it.
The steward did as he asked and stopped them. The brothers denied doing anything and referenced their good will in bringing the extra payment back when they returned. "We would not do such a thing." they said.
This story will continue next week as they try to prove that the brothers were guilty.

Then he commanded the steward of his house, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack, and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain." And he did as Joseph told him.
As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys. They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his steward, "Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good? ' Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.' "
When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words. 'They said to him, "Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! Behold, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord's house?
