The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 41, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 41:29-36
We see Joseph repeating the same thing he said last week but today, he does so with a lot more detail and some suggestions on how to avoid disaster. This is the case in Hebrew texts and has been so since the account of creation. Creation starts with an overview and then a more detailed account of exactly what happened each day. Joseph said there would be a great famine for seven years after seven years of plenty in last week's post. Now, he seems to be repeating it all again. He adds that the years of plenty would be totally forgotten due to the horror of the lack that they will experience in the second set of seven years.
He also adds that the duplicate dreams with the same interpretation tells him that there is no changing what is about to happen. God's mind is set. He suggests that Pharaoh find a wise man and put him over the land to collect a tax and store up the grain while there is plenty and in turn avoid starvation later.
In the movie "Joseph" we saw the Pharaoh tossing Joseph back into jail and more dreams haunting the leader until he decides to listen to the slave. But in the Tanakh, he takes Joseph's suggestions and decides on an overseer. That part is for next week.
Today's reading
English
There will come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt,
but after them there will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land, and the plenty will be unknown in the land by reason of the famine that will follow, for it will be very severe. And the doubling of Pharaoh's dream means that the thing is fixed by God, and God will shortly bring it about. Now therefore let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one- fifth of the produce of the land' of Egypt during the seven plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. That food shall be a reserve for the land against the seven years of famine that are to occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land may not perish through the famine.
